Telehealth CPT Code Set Update

The CPT Editorial Panel that issues and maintains the CPT code set has created new telehealth codes effective January 1, 2025. These CPT codes describe specific services that previously required code/modifier combinations to adequately describe the type of Telehealth service provided.

Consistent with CMS, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina (Blue Cross NC) will not reimburse for these new Telehealth CPT codes.  Blue Cross NC will continue to require our providers to submit for Telehealth services using the existing code plus modifier combination to describe asynchronous vs synchronous, audio vs audio/video, etc. as described in our Telehealth reimbursement policies (Commercial Plan Policy Notification (PDF)) (Medicare Advantage Policy Notification (PDF)). Therefore, there are no changes required to how our providers code for the telehealth services they provide.

This applies to Commercial, Federal Employee Program (FEP), Inter-Plan Program (IPP) Host, ASO, and Medicare Advantage, noting CMS has opted not to reimburse for these codes as well.

These new (non-reimbursed) codes include:
