Blue Cross NC to Sunset Diabetes Prevention Program: Eat Smart, Move More, Prevent Diabetes

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina (Blue Cross NC) will sunset participation in the Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) Eat Smart, Move More, Prevent Diabetes (ESMMPD) with North Carolina State University. The final class series accepting enrollment will begin October 8, 2023.

Members who enroll through the October 8, 2023, class series can participate in the program through the end of 2024. Members seeking to enroll in a DPP after this date can enroll in the Community DPP, Diabetes Free NC.

Diabetes Free NC is a free DPP that is open to any North Carolina resident who meets certain clinical criteria, regardless of insurance coverage. The class structure and content are similar to ESMMPD. Members interested in enrolling in Diabetes Free NC can call 844-328-0021 to speak with a DPP navigator and find a program.

ESMMPD is a 12-month online program developed and delivered by NC State University. Recognized by the CDC, the program delivers classes in two phases, which are led by an instructor. The program aims to prevent prediabetes from developing into the more serious Type 2 diabetes through lifestyle changes.

ESMMPD is available to subscribers and their covered dependents on Individual, Under-65 medical plans, and Fully Insured Group medical plans that have elected this benefit. Members learn about the program from marketing campaigns and can self-enroll.
