Providers Asked to Verify Taxonomy Codes

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina (Blue Cross NC) is updating our participating providers' demographic information to include taxonomy codes. We’re matching providers’ National Provider Identifiers (NPIs) and credentialed specialties to the corresponding taxonomy codes for types and areas of specialty.

If you receive a letter with taxonomy codes matched to your specific NPI, please review the codes.

  • If the taxonomy codes are correct, no additional action is necessary.
  • If there are any inaccuracies, please update the roster within 45 days and send to Blue Cross NC by email (ProviderTaxonomy@bcbsnc.com) or fax to 919-287-5644.

Inaccuracies will be analyzed and responded to in the order in which they are received.

About taxonomy codes

  • When an NPI is shared by multiple provider entities, specialties, or locations, taxonomy codes can be critical in determining an appropriate provider record.
  • Starting in the first quarter of 2019, Blue Cross NC will join other Blue Cross and Blue Shield Plans in including providers' taxonomy codes among the data elements transmitted and used to process claims within the Inter Plan (BlueCard®) Program. This allows Blue Plans to easily identify providers’ specific areas specialization when processing BlueCard claims.
  • Taxonomy code inaccuracies or changes should be reported to us as soon as possible to ensure the most appropriate codes are transmitted to other Blue Plans.
  • There is no change to how you file claims for your BlueCard-eligible patients.
