Delays for Enrolling New Providers

Dec. 22, 2021 Update: This communication has been reposted with edited verbiage. The communication was originally posted on November 22, 2021

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina (Blue Cross NC) has been experiencing an extraordinarily high volume of new provider enrollment requests for several months. This is causing a significant delay in enrolling new providers. All requests are being completed by date received.

To ensure you are not delayed in seeing patients or holding claims, we are offering a time limited opportunity to file an Enrollment Pending Claims Filing Exception form. This will allow you to bill under another participating provider within your group practice while waiting for enrollment completion. Please see the FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) for the intended use and instructions.

Please do not resend requests as it will add to the delay of enrollment completion.

Please do not file any provider claims if the provider has not been fully enrolled and if you have not received confirmation of enrollment via a Welcome Letter. We will keep you updated on our progress monthly until our turnaround times for enrollments are back to normal.

There are current and historical factors that have led to this backlog, including a large influx of provider changes and inquiries resulting from the COVID-19 outbreak. We have taken the following steps to address this issue:

  • We have increased staff optimizing the provider data platforms to create more streamlined enrollment processes
  • Automating manual workflows for more efficient data entry
  • Revisiting standard operating procedures for improvement opportunities

We apologize for the inconvenience. We truly value your partnership and are sincerely grateful for your patience and understanding during this busy time.
