Community Diversity and Engagement

Corporate citizenship

Our efforts allow us to broaden our positive impacts across North Carolina.

Giving back is at the heart of our mission

Local connections

By deepening our local connections, we better serve our members.

Community support

Our community support extends beyond health care.

Volunteer events

Volunteering gives us other ways to support our neighbors.

Extra Miles Tour

In 2021, we began this listening tour of all of North Carolina’s 100 counties. Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina (Blue Cross NC) leaders visit hospitals, colleges and other institutions. We meet with local leaders to discuss community activism, policy and how Blue Cross NC can better work to meet each community’s needs.

Board service

Blue Cross NC has passionate employees who are committed to serving our communities. Many of our company's officers serve on nonprofit boards of directors and committees across the state.

Arts and culture

The arts enrich our lives beyond measure and are vital to the health of any community. We’re proud to support several visual and performing arts organizations in our home state, including our recent support of a performing arts program for historically underserved children.

Chambers of Commerce

We strategically align with Chambers of Commerce across the state that help promote economic development, build our corporate reputation and brand strength, and provide business value and employee networking opportunities.

GivingWorks

In 2022, we raised more than $1.4M for nonprofit organizations during the company’s annual giving campaign, “GivingWorks." With the company match, that totals more than $2.4M of direct impact to those organizations in a time when they need it most.1

Dollars for Doers

Dollars for Doers rewards employees for volunteering and submitting volunteer hours. Employees can use their Volunteer Paid Time Off (VTO) to serve their communities, or they can volunteer on their own time. Employees who record volunteer hours will be rewarded with a match of $10 per hour (maximum of $100) to go to the nonprofit of their choice.

Volunteer events

At Blue Cross NC, volunteer events give us the opportunity to lean into our company purpose and serve our neighbors. In 2021 alone, 200+ employees contributed more than 3,000 volunteer hours to our local communities. Through volunteering, we’re able to channel our skills, enthusiasm and dedication to make a difference in our own backyard.

Pro Bono: Skills-Based Volunteerism

Our pro bono efforts are opportunities for nonprofits to access support from our employee volunteers in the areas of marketing and communications, data collection and management, customer service and information technology.

USO Bike Build

Every year, our employees put together bicycles for children of military service members. Over 70 Blue Cross NC employees have participated, building 150 new bikes for more than 80 military families.

KABOOM!

Blue Cross NC employees have partnered with KABOOM! to build 16 playspaces for kids across our state. Play is a key component of childhood development. We hope these playspaces provide a safe place to play for many children, now and in the years to come.
