Enrolling in Medicare doesn't have to be complicated. Explore guides, tips, and expert support to help you every step of the way.
You become eligible to enroll in Medicare three months before you turn 65. This is called your Initial Enrollment Period, and it runs until three months after your birthday.
But this isn't the only time you can enroll. There are two other timeframes during which you can enroll in or switch plans. There are also several special enrollment periods that apply when you experience certain life events.
The Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) is a seven-month eligibility window to sign up for Medicare Parts A and B. Coverage starts the month after you sign up in the IEP. The eligibility window opens three months before you turn 65 and ends three months after you turn 65.
If you wait past your initial enrollment period, you may have to pay a late-enrollment penalty added to your premiums.
The Annual Election Period (AEP) runs from October 15 to December 7.
During this time, you can review your health care needs, explore new plan options, and make changes to your Medicare Advantage (Part C) or Medicare Prescription Drug (Part D) plans.
The Open Enrollment Period (OEP) runs from January 1 through March 31 and is a time when you can reflect on the plan selections you have made for the year.
It is a one-time chance to change to a similar plan with coverage taking effect the month after you make the change.
A Special Enrollment Period (SEP) is an enrollment opportunity that allows you to sign up for Medicare outside the standard enrollment periods. SEPs are due to specific circumstances, such as losing other health coverage or moving to a new area.
