Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina (Blue Cross NC) is notifying providers of an upcoming change affecting the Teladoc Diabetes Management Program for Medicare Advantage and Dual Eligible Special Needs Plan (D-SNP) members. Effective August 1, 2026, Blue Cross NC will end this program.
Providers may receive questions from members regarding replacement for their Teladoc meter. Please see below for recommended guidance.
What this means for enrolled members
- After August 1, 2026, enrolled members will no longer receive blood glucose monitors, related supplies, or have access to the digital support and platform through the Teladoc program.
- Members may contact the Customer Service number on the back of their Blue Cross NC Member ID Card for benefit and / or case management support during this transition.
Glucose meter coverage
- The plan-preferred glucose meter is the Ascensia (Contour) meter.
- To receive this meter and supplies at 100% coverage, members must:
- Obtain a prescription from their provider.
- Fill the prescription at an in-network pharmacy.
- Members may choose to continue using their Teladoc provided meter, however:
- The Teladoc blood glucose meter uses proprietary strips that are only available through the vendor. When the program ends, the benefit will no longer be covered, and the strips will no longer be available.
- To receive strips that are covered by their benefit, members will need to switch to a covered blood glucose meter and strips.
- Members will be responsible for out-of-pocket costs if they do not transition to the plan-preferred meter.
D-SNP coverage
- There are no plan-preferred or non-preferred diabetes meters or supplies for D-SNP plans.
- These members are still required to receive a prescription from their physician.
Provider action
To support members as the program ends, please:
- Prescribe the Ascensia (Contour) glucose meter and supplies when requested and clinically appropriate for Medicare Advantage plans.
- Encourage Medicare Advantage and D-SNP members to use in-network pharmacies for full coverage.
- Direct members needing additional support to call the number on the back of their Blue Cross NC Member ID card.
We appreciate your partnership and continued commitment to the care of our members.
