Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina (Blue Cross NC) has engaged Prime Therapeutics (Prime) to help Fully Insured group and Individual Under 65 members save on their prescriptions starting April 1, 2026, with the Low Cost Alternative Rx program powered by Levrx.

Low Cost Alternative Rx is a digital pharmacy tool that helps members get their prescriptions at a more affordable cost by identifying clinically appropriate, plan-covered alternatives and other ways to save, such as switching pharmacies. Integrated with the Prime platform, Levrx uses a pharmacist-approved database to match viable alternative medications to a member’s formulary, then ranks them by cost.

Members can view lower-cost options, personalized savings, and nearby pharmacies in real time through the Low Cost Alternative Rx app or website – making pharmacy benefits simple and clear, and convenient.

Program highlights:

• Medication alternatives: Members can review clinically viable, lower-cost alternatives to prescribed medications, helping members fill covered medications and save money.
• Pharmacy search: The app allows members to easily search for pharmacies, compare prices, and switch locations to save more.
• Personalized savings alerts: Members receive notifications when new ways to save are available, with reminders if no action is taken.
• Member engagement: Levrx sends cobranded, multi-channel outreach (email, push notifications, phone) on behalf of Blue Cross NC to keep members informed about savings and any benefit changes or pharmacy disruptions.

What providers need to know

Members can review clinically viable, lower-cost alternatives to prescribed medications with their providers during a visit, helping members fill covered medications and save money.

If a member chooses to switch medications, Levrx coordinates with providers by phone to confirm an appropriate alternative before any change. When needed, Levrx may send an eFax to request providers send a prescription to a member’s chosen pharmacy.

Providers should direct member questions to the support tools in the Low Cost Alternative Rx app or website, or to Blue Cross NC Customer Service using the phone number on the back of their ID card.
