Virta to Terminate Type-2 Diabetes Contract with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina Effective Mar. 23, 2023

Virta has notified Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina (Blue Cross NC) of termination of their contract to participate in our network of services. The termination of the contract with Virta for the pilot program goes into effect on Mar. 23, 2023. As a result, new members will not be enrolled in the Virta pilot program and referrals to Virta for the program should end effective immediately.  

Our priority is to ensure that our members have access to high-quality, convenient and affordable care. Blue Cross NC members currently enrolled in the Virta pilot program will continue to receive care until they can be transitioned to another program or provider. Additionally, we are working to provide alternative care options for members interested in this program.

Prior to Mar. 23, the Blue Cross NC Nurse Support program will outreach to members actively using Virta to offer enrollment to the Nurse Support – Condition Care program, which has tools, such as Wellframe, a mobile application that offers diabetes management content.

Currently, Blue e shows if a Blue Cross NC member is eligible for the Virta pilot program. This information will continue to appear in Blue e due to the vendor’s use of the system through program run-out. Providers should disregard the Virta eligibility message and no longer refer members to the program.

The Pivot program may also be referenced in Blue e eligibility when checking for Virta program eligibility. The Pivot program remains active and does not apply to this communication.
