The health of our state depends on the health of our communities.

Communities in all 100 counties across North Carolina are facing an ever-changing landscape. People are coming together to work for good and provide access to safe housing, healthy food, medicine, education and resources – the core drivers of health.
Blue Cross NC leaders have completed our initial goal of visiting all 100 counties in our great state through the Extra Miles Tour, a listening tour across the state, meeting with community leaders who are making a positive impact. Their solutions include regional economic development initiatives, collaborative partnerships between health care providers and community colleges and more. Over the duration of this tour, we sought to understand what counties are facing and how we can lift up those who are going the extra mile — the people who live and work in their communities and know them best.
As we travel more, connect through site visits and bond with communities, our continuing goal is to understand the local strengths and opportunities of our state, to celebrate those working to improve the health and well-being of all North Carolinians and to learn from their worthy efforts to create solutions for our toughest shared challenges. We’re passionate about work that makes a difference, and we won’t stop until health care is better for all.

The Extra Miles Tour gave us the opportunity to hear directly from local leaders in all 100 North Carolina counties on the unique challenges and opportunities they face in working to improve the health and well-being of their communities. The Extra Miles Tour report, Beyond a Listening Tour: Insights From Going the Extra Mile, gives you a clear, insightful look at the common threads and critical issues those leaders raised.
The Extra Miles Tour is the perfect opportunity for Blue Cross NC leadership to listen and learn from our members and the communities we are fortunate to serve. We know that the most powerful way to connect with others is to listen, and we are building relationships that will help us better serve our state.
