How ABCCM connected Hurricane Helene survivors to care April 24, 2025 Our Communities 1 MINUTE READ

When Hurricane Helene swept through Western North Carolina, one volunteer-driven organization, Asheville Buncombe Community Christian Ministry (ABCCM), was quick to help.

The team mobilized their free clinic and pharmacy to support the community when thousands were unable to access essential medications. Volunteers like Andrea, a pharmacist with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina’s (Blue Cross NC) Healthy Blue Medicaid managed care plan, stepped in to visit emergency shelters and assess urgent needs.

ABCCM’s involvement in the region extends beyond medical care. To support the organization’s vital role, Healthy Blue replaced one of ABCCM’s box trucks that was destroyed by the storm so volunteers could continue delivering food, diapers, and hygiene products.

ABCCM is working tirelessly every day to address community challenges – and they don’t have to do it alone. We're committed to standing beside the Western North Carolina community in its recovery.

Hurricane Helene hit the region in September 2024, marking the start of a multi-year recovery to rebuild infrastructure, businesses, and homes. To help North Carolina communities impacted by the hurricane, Blue Cross NC has contributed $3 million in aid and strengthened local partnerships, like the one with ABCCM. Months later, our partnerships continue to provide medical care, food, and shelter, ensuring no one is left behind.
