Effective November 20, 2025, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina (Blue Cross NC) is introducing digital member ID cards for individual under-65 subscribers who have a member portal account and are enrolled in paperless delivery. This change is designed to streamline access, improve accuracy, and enhance the member experience.
What's changing
Starting November 20, ID cards created for individual under-65 subscribers will be delivered based on the member’s delivery preference in their Blue Cross NC member portal. If a subscriber is enrolled in paperless delivery for plan documents, their ID card will be issued digitally. This preference also applies to their dependents.
Why this matters for providers
Faster Access and Fewer Delays: Digital ID cards provide members with immediate access to coverage information, reducing delays caused by mail delivery and lost cards.
Automatic Updates: Digital cards are updated automatically to reflect current benefit information, ensuring providers have the most accurate data at the point of care.
Mobile Integration: Members can add their ID card to their mobile wallet, making it easier to present at check-in and streamlining the verification process.
Seamless Eligibility Verification: Providers can use the Eligibility and Benefits (E+B) feature within Availity Essentials to access the most current member information in real time, eliminating the need for physical cards.
What providers should do
Update Staff and Workflows: Ensure your front desk and billing teams are prepared to accept digital member ID cards. Train staff to verify eligibility and benefits using Availity Essentials or the Blue Cross NC provider portal.
Delivery process
Members will receive an email notification when their digital ID card is ready, with instructions for downloading and adding it to their mobile wallet. If an email cannot be delivered, a physical ID card will be mailed automatically, and the member will be removed from paperless delivery for plan documents. Members can request a physical card at any time through the Blue Cross NC member portal or by calling Customer Service. Agents may also request a physical card for their customers through the Agent Portal.
