Stephen Friedhoff, MD

Senior Vice President, Health Care Services

Dr. Stephen Friedhoff is Senior Vice President, Health Care Services, at Blue Cross NC, and is responsible for relationships with health care providers, medical policy, corporate pharmacy, appeals, care management, and overall leadership of our health care division. He also leads the implementation of Blue Cross NC medical cost and care initiatives such as value-based care and other innovative payment models, in addition to supporting programs for independent primary care practices.

Dr. Friedhoff is a seasoned executive with more than 20 years of experience in clinical academic and administrative leadership roles. He most recently served as Chief Clinical Officer for Help at Home.  Prior to that Dr. Friedhoff served from 2008-2020 at Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield as enterprise Chief Clinical Officer and earlier roles including SVP Clinical Strategy and Programs, Chief Medical Officer of Anthem’s Government Business Division and a similar role with Amerigroup Corporation. Earlier roles included Regional Medical director with Independence Blue Cross in Philadelphia, PA and Clinical Faculty and Medical Director at the Virtua Family Medicine Residency Program in Mount Holly, NJ. He continued to practice Family Medicine in NJ part time until 2015.

Dr. Friedhoff also serves on the board of Medical Review Institute of America, the Advisory Council of PsychHub and the HealthCare Spending and Value Council for Health Affairs. He served as a Trustee on the Board of Samaritan Hospice in Marlton, New Jersey from 2006 to 2012 and the Board of Agape Care, a hospice organization in South Carolina from 2018 to 2021. He is a past recipient of the “Home Care Physician of The Year” award in New Jersey.

Dr. Friedhoff obtained his undergraduate degree at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY, summa cum laude, and his medical degree at the Rutgers–New Jersey Medical School in Newark, NJ. He completed his family medicine residency at Virtua Memorial Hospital in Mount Holly, NJ where he served as Chief Resident and was the recipient of the New Jersey Resident of the Year Award by the New Jersey Academy of Family Physicians.

Dr. Friedhoff is a certified health insurance executive through America’s Health Insurance Plans, a diplomat of the American Academy of Family Physicians and board certified by the American Board of Family Medicine. He holds active medical licenses in North Carolina, New Jersey, Florida, Virginia and Indiana.
