Our post-graduate year one (PYG1) managed care pharmacy residency is a yearlong program designed to develop clinical expertise, leadership skills, and innovative thinking.
With structured rotations, personalized mentorship, and hands-on experience with a mix of patient populations, you'll gain the skills needed for board certification and PGY2 training and be prepared to thrive in a rapidly evolving health care environment.
Through our rotations, you'll gain experience in clinical review, formulary management, and utilization management. You'll also develop a comprehensive understanding of pharmacy quality, population health, and value-based care.
Gain a comprehensive overview of the clinical review process for the commercial market with exposure to both pharmacy and medical prior authorization reviews.
Collaborate with major North Carolina health care systems through the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina (Blue Cross NC) Blue Premier℠ program to drive accountable care and improve outcomes.
Explore all aspects of coverage and organization determination reviews for Medicare, developing expertise in regulatory requirements and clinical decision-making.
Help shape Medicare Part D formularies and utilization management programs and learn how clinical strategy meets regulatory compliance.
Dive into the clinical and operational aspects of pharmacy quality programs with a focus on Star Ratings and medication therapy management services that drive better patient outcomes.
Contribute to the Medicare bid process by helping build the plan’s benefits for the upcoming year. You'll gain insight into competitive strategy and regulatory alignment.
Design and execute an original practice advancement project, culminating in a presentation to an external audience and a publication-ready manuscript.
Analyze utilization trends and contribute to formulary strategies that support commercial populations, while deepening your knowledge of clinical pharmacy services and programs.
Explore the dynamic specialty pharmacy landscape by working with high-cost, high-complexity medications and care models while addressing clinical, operational, and policy challenges.

Blue Cross NC pharmacy leadership contributes to shaping program goals and fostering cross-functional collaboration, giving you exposure to policy discussions, strategic planning, and industry trends.

Applicants must have graduated from an Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education-accredited college of pharmacy and be eligible for pharmacy licensure in North Carolina by the start of the residency (around July 1).
