What drives us
At Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina (Blue Cross NC), our purpose guides all that we do and all that we strive for. That purpose is supported by four key pillars and serves to focus our work.
Healthy communities
We’re committed to helping North Carolina thrive. We’re listening to and connecting with communities to collaborate on programs that provide better health care for everyone in North Carolina.
Healthy members
We work to make sure that every person with health coverage from Blue Cross NC has access to high-quality, affordable care. We constantly strive to make health care simpler, better, and more affordable.
Healthy workforce
We are dedicated to building a purpose-driven culture that fosters a welcoming environment and reflects the communities we serve. We align every employee’s work to our purpose of making health care better for all.
Healthy business
We create sustainable business value by increasing affordability through cost of care savings and by spurring innovation. Our healthy business ensures lasting value and enables us to deliver on our purpose.
Purpose and progress go hand in hand
While our purpose and the pillars that support it never change, the always evolving health care landscape presents new opportunities to make progress. Our purpose uniquely positions us to address the state’s most pressing health challenges.
This is not a temporary effort. It's our commitment to driving long-term, sustainable change in North Carolina.
Acting on what we’ve learned from our members and communities across our state, we have three purpose-driven initiatives currently underway.

A purposeful partnership
Central to our purpose is an unrelenting commitment to improving the health and well-being of our customers and communities.
In 2000, we established the independent Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina Foundation as an essential partner in this pursuit. Since then, they have worked alongside nonprofit organizations, government entities, and community partnerships across the state, investing $258 million into communities through more than 1,600 grants, collaborations, and special initiatives.1
